About North Myrtle Beach

North Myrtle Beach, located on the northern South Carolina coast, was formed in 1968 with a merger of area towns Windy Hill, Crescent Beach, Cherry Grove and Atlantic Beach. Though Atlantic Beach, chose to remain its own town during the merger and is independently run, it is serviced by North Myrtle Beach.

This area, originally inhabited by the Winyah and Waccamaw Indians, followed by the Spanish settlers in 1514 and Blackbeard’s pirates in the 1700s, remained mostly uninhabited until the first railroad was created in 1900. Prior to the creation of the railroad, the North Myrtle Beach area was difficult to reach, which prevented many from settling there. The introduction of the railroad was followed by the creation of the Intracoastal Waterway in 1936, which opened the area to further development.

North Myrtle Beach, home to nine miles of wide, beautiful beaches, is one of the primary tourist towns along South Carolina’s Pawleys Island. A variety of activities and entertainment are available for all ages in the North Myrtle Beach area. Water activities include scuba diving, charter fishing, pier fishing, or simply relaxing on the beach. Children in your family will enjoy a trip to Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum or Ripley’s Aquarium, or an afternoon of miniature golf or bumper cars at an area amusement park.
