About Murrells Inlet

Murrells Inlet, South Carolina began as a small fishing village. In the early 1900s, commercial fishing was a popular industry for Murrells Inlet, and catches were shipped north on schooners. By 1914, fishermen in Murrells Inlet had expanded into the recreational fishing industry, taking people on excursions out of the inlet on 20-foot skiffs for a day of fishing for $5.00 per person.

During the Great Depression, Archer Milton Huntington from New York came to the area, spending millions of dollars developing his 9,000-acre homestead and gardens. Today, this area is Huntington Beach State Park and Brookgreen Gardens, both of which are major attractions for visitors to the area. Huntington also built a church, medical clinic and community center in the area, which helped to boost the struggling economy at the time.

Today, along with the rest of the Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet is a popular tourist and retirement location that is best known for its "Restaurant Row," a number of delicious seafood and barbecue restaurants located on Main Street, Murrells Inlet is located just 15 miles south of Myrtle Beach.

A variety of activities are abundant in Murrells Inlet, which offers a variety of outdoor activities including golf, fishing, water sports and more. The close proximity to Myrtle Beach also offers an abundance of shopping and entertainment for those of all ages.

Though today's primary industry of Murrells Inlet is tourism, the names of local streets and neighborhoods are reminiscent of the people, plantations and cottages of the area's history.
