About Conway

Conway, the county seat of Horry County, is home to numerous buildings and structures that are on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the oldest towns in South Carolina, Conway was created in 1734 with an original name of Kingston. The current name of Conway was given to the town in 1883 by the General Assembly.

Situated on the South Carolina Coastal Plain on the western banks of the Waccamaw River, Conway is located about 15 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach. In the 1980s, Conway participated in the Main Street USA project, which was successful in revitalizing the downtown area, which now consists of quaint shops and bistros.

The highlight of downtown Conway is the Riverwalk, which is an area following a stretch of the Waccamaw River and is home to a variety of fine dining establishments. Visitors to Conway also enjoy shopping in the Historic Downtown Business District or taking a self-guided tour of this historic town with the Historic Trails Map. The Horry County Museum located in Conway also offers visitors a look into the history of this unique town, as well as surrounding areas.
